A.I. Art Is Same Issue As Transgender ControversyI was browsing through DA and wondered if society's reaction to A.I. generated art is the same as society's reaction to the transgender controversy. i.e. What if the issue isn't about theft, cheating, bigotry, nor universal human rights? What if the issue is about a lack of clearly stating what the audience is looking at? If I have a sense that I was fooled, I feel anger instead of acceptance. For me as an artist, it's a letdown when I see somebody's amazing digital artwork and realize after a few seconds that it was A.I. generated art instead. Yet, I've noticed while browsing DA that I don't have that letdown if an artist truthfully and openly states in the title that the artwork is A.I. generated. If it's announced clearly, all I think is, "Hey! That's awesome artwork!" as opposed to, "Hey, that scab cheated!"What I really hate is when the artist deliberately tries to trick the audience and doesn't say what the actual artistic medium was. A.I. generated artwork being presented as yes-I-made-this-from-scratch-and-it-took-a-lot-of-effort is akin to holding aloft a March Madness trophy when you haven't played basketball since you were 16. I loathe moments when A.I. generated artwork "identifies as" non-A.I. generated artwork. It's not the A.I. generated artwork itself which bothers me. It's the lying which bothers me. When a transgendered person is perceived as being ha-ha-I-fooled-you, there's a sense of awkwardness and spite going on. When somebody is up front about being mtf or ftm or strictly neither gender, I think lots of people can grasp that and move on. For me personally, it's the sensation of being tricked that causes much of the anger. (Come to think of it. Maybe that's why the whole trend of openly drag storybook readers in U.S. grade schools doesn't bother me much. Somebody watching RuPaul's Drag Race knows ahead of time that yes, these are all guys who like performing in drag. It's not like the audience got tricked into watching it. The Crying Game or Some Like It Hot aren't nearly as disturbing as movies if audiences already know about the famous plot twists. If I show up with free tickets to a basketball game and it's a football game, I'm going to be mad, even if I usually like football. False advertising on dating sites is not funny. Granted, being worried that you'll get beaten up for being honest on a dating app is not funny, either.) I never noticed until today that the controversies of A.I. generated art and gender identity are so similar....
